• Christmas in July at The Maslow Sandton’s Lacuna Bistro

Southern hemisphere Christmas is special in its own way, but many people yearn for the joys of a winter celebration, which lends itself to comfort and cosiness. The origin of this is surprising: while it has a mention in the 19th-century French opera Werther, it rose to prominence in the northern hemisphere. In 1935, the National Recreation Association's journal Recreation described what a Christmas in July was like at a girl's camp in Brevard, North Carolina, writing that "all mystery and wonder surround this annual event.”

The concept has continued to this day, so we in the south celebrate, as do those in the north, albeit somewhat ironically, with opposite seasons. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with having two Christmases in a year, one in winter and one in summer.

This 25 July, which falls on a Friday, Lacuna Bistro at The Maslow Sandton will be creating a winter wonderland with a Christmas-themed setting and all the holiday magic and goodwill. There will be themed entertainment for children, with face painting and Santa Claus in attendance. A fabulous feast is synonymous with this festive occasion, and this event will uphold that with a lavish buffet to get your mouth watering.

Start with a selection of freshly baked breads with curry butter, hummus and olive oil before building your own salad. Elements to choose from include cocktail tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, olives, feta, mixed peppers, croutons, boiled eggs and bacon bits. Alongside this will be ready-prepared dishes like broccoli, sweetcorn and avocado salad, calamari and citrus salad, pasta salad, butternut and blue cheese salad and potato salad.

For mains, load your plate with lamb curry, BBQ roast chicken, grilled line fish with creamy mussels and dill sauce, sticky ginger sauce pork belly, three cheese macaroni bake, rosemary roasted baby potatoes, saffron basmati rice, honey glazed rainbow carrots, creamed spinach and mushrooms.

To finish, the sweet treats will hit the right note. Think red velvet opera cake, caramel pound cake, malva pudding with rooibos custard, chocolate ganache tart, cheese board with crackers and fruit skewers.
