Wanting to get out of Joburg for the weekend without having to travel too far? Looking to find something a little quirky and different without compromising on standards? Then look no further than 26 Degrees South, a bush hotel with an intriguing history nestled in Muldersdrift with the picturesque Magaliesberg Mountains for a backdrop.
The scene of the first Government of National Unity conference in 1995, what was the Aloe Ridge Hotel has since transformed into 26 Degrees South. The Sol Kerzner built hotel hosted many political conferences and well-known public figures in its old persona, including politicians like Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, Oliver Tambo and Mangosuthu Buthelezi. Each of these political stalwarts had a suite named after them and the names have remained on the suites as the hotel went through its transformation.
26 Degrees South is a bush hotel but with a very real boho feel to it, where things are done differently. It’s slogan is ‘We do it our way, your way, the bush boho way’. The hotel is a place where worlds collide and a destination where cosmopolitan meets tranquillity. The buck head logo was used to promote the bush side of the property while the bohemian colours prepare guests for the quirkiness they will encounter on arrival.
Don’t expect your average standard hotel room either. Each of the 76 luxury rooms and 4 spacious luxury suites redefine African bush accommodation with a modern bush-boho twist. Free wireless internet, select DStv channels, individual air-conditioning and heating, tea & coffee making facilities and hairdryers are available in all rooms. Bathrooms provide complimentary amenities.
Conferencing for up to 150 delegates is available in a choice of six conference rooms. The conference lounge area is available to delegates to relax with a cup of tea or coffee, and printing services are provided on site for all last-minute requirements.
Weddings with a difference are the order of the day at 26 Degrees South and the venue can accommodate up to 120 seated guests per wedding. Couples planning to tie the knot before the end of the year qualify for free venue hire at 26 Degrees South. The hotel will soon be launching its Wedding Warrior contest where one lucky couple will win a wedding ceremony with 80 guests including venue hire, dinner on the wedding night plus 10 rooms for the bridal couple and bridal party.
Birdwatching, relaxing in the outdoor pool with a mountain view, bar flying or simply soul searching; 26 Degrees South has everything on site or nearby for a true getaway from the city. The in-house restaurant provides meals for the ravenous and not so hungry, while the bush-boho bar has an impressive selection of craft beers and premium spirits.
